Plastertex Recipes

Hello Artisans by the Sea,

I went on line and found these retailers to purchase Faux Effect/Aqua Solutions from:
Some may be more current than others. (Like our own Dawn. I do not think that she stocks Aqua Solutions anymore, but you can call her to find out. )

In class we used
Aquabond off white
Plastertex
Untinted Plastertex
Aquaglaze
Stain and Seal Rich Brown

At home I prepped the sample boards by painting them with Aquabond off white as our basecoat.

We rolled on a thinned out layer of Plastertex. Water it down just a little at a time to thin it so that you can roll it on. Remember we rolled it every which way.
We let it dry for a little bit then we troweled on another layer of Plastertex
We troweled in a skip trowel fashion using a venetian trowel or pavan trowel.
We left little holes in our finish to make it look more textured. These holes will fill up with glaze later when we color it.

Next we placed our one layer stencil on our sample boards and filled it in
With Plastertex using a japan scraper or plastic trowel.

We didn’t have a chance to color our boards in class because they were so wet
But you were interested in the colored boards that I brought to show.

The Lightest board was colored with Faux Crème clear glaze and two colors which
Were Dark brown and Italian sienna faux crème colors. Faux crème is a proprietary
Product that you have to be licensed to use but you could also use
Aquacreme and aquacolors which anyone can purchase.
Their colors are dark brown and golden sienna.
On a large job I use 4 cups Faux Crème Clear to 1 Tablespoon Dark brown Faux Crème color but on a sample board I use 6 Tablespoons of faux crème clear to 1 teaspoon of color. The same for the Golden/Italian sienna.
Slap each color/glaze separately onto the sample board with a chip brush and then blend with the leon neon brush. Be sure to feather out your edges on a wall.

The medium range sample board was colored with Honey Pine Stain and Seal mixed with Aquaglaze. It is about half and half. Half stain to half glaze. Dab on color/glaze with chip brush and then blend with the leon neon brush. Don’t use stain and seal all by itself because it will dry so fast that you will have a hard time blending it.

The golden brown sample board had tinted plastertex. I used the untinted plastertex and put Golden Oak stain and seal into the plaster. I did two layers of plaster, the rolled one and the skip trowel one and then did the stencil just like we did in class. It was so colorful that I put a real tight layer of plain Plastertex with no color mixed in over the entire board to tone it down. The next step was to stain it with Rich Brown Stain and Seal and Aquaglaze.

The reddish board was rolled on Plastertex. I rolled on two layers. This one would be good for those of you who are unfamiliar with the trowel but want to have the same/similar look. Let dry and then stain with Antique Mahogany stain and seal mixed with Aquaglaze.

Remember to wear gloves when staining because it stains your hands.
Feather out your glaze when you color your two feet by two feet area or smaller so
That when you do the next section you will feather it into your first area. That way there are no large areas of doubled up glaze called water marks.

Now go play with paint and have fun… Julie
